Artist Giorgio Sciarretta Celebrates The Art of LifeIndonesia's Creative Soul
The thought of making art from daily life experiences has always engaged Italian artist Giorgio Sciarretta, whose contemporary art exhibition is being showcased at Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Jakarta from August to October.
Sciarretta described his path to art as one of awakening, quite literally.
“I started drawing ever since I woke up from a coma,” he reminisced, as he opened up his life story.
Sciarretta has been living in Indonesia since 1997. As an artist residing in Bali, he explored different techniques and artworks. But wearing another hat, as an entrepreneur, he also took to establishing a company that specialised in importing and exporting furniture and handicrafts. The latter, he admitted, ended up consuming most of his attention.
“I was too busy with the import-export life in Bali, and didn’t get much time to draw. I have passed so many hard times in my life, including the loss of loved ones, friends, family, and most importantly, I came close to dying 25 times. Two years ago I closed my company, got married to Indonesian woman, and then moved to Jakarta to reproduce my paintings. So, here I am, representing a new chapter in my life,” he said. Through painting and drawing on a wide range of media, Sciarretta now contemplates on modern day society. He usually draws inspiration from life, the after-life, the universe and nature.
“Thanks to Sante Monachesi, one of the most important painters in Italy, I was greatly encouraged to develop my skills on many things, such as oil on canvas, acrylics on canvas, gesso primer, acrylic, wax, plastic board and spray paints,” said the artist who enjoys discovering different genres.
“A New Life” is a reflection of a new beginning in Sciarretta’s career and life. It also underlines the connection between Indonesia and Italy. Aside from the exhibition in Jakarta, Sciarretta’s works of art are also being showcased at his private gallery, Villa Sciarretta in Rome, and at a private gallery in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
