I was recently approached by a very gentle and charming lady in Bali airport. “Excuse Me”, she said “are you Alistair Speirs”?

“Yes” I answered, having no idea who she was but wanting to be polite! It turned out she was an artist called Nita Nursita, and her story was quite intriguing!

It seems she finds the way I write my “Soapbox” column every month inspiring and uses the words she finds there as themes for her paintings, and has been kind enough to send me some of them to grace these pages.

Here is a brief overview of Nita’s life and works kindly contributed by Emmanuele Bethery, the Founder of Hidden Talents of Indonesia:

Nita Nursita
Sculptor & Painter

“Born in Bandung (Java), on 24th January 1967 but lives in Jakarta where she paints as well as sculpts. She graduated from the Bandung School of Foreign Languages in 1992 (STBA) and from the Jakarta School of Management in 1998.

Nita studied sculpture and painting under the direction of many different masters from 1997 until the present day and she studied painting and drawing at L’Académie de Port Royal in Paris as a summer course in 2001.

She has participated in several group exhibitions in Indonesia, and exhibits regularly in Japan and France.

Nita is a very active and passionate woman and spends a lot of her time working for a charity which helps the street children of Jakarta for whom she organises an annual art exhibition.

She is much appreciated for her generosity, her desire for equality and her principle of sharing.

Her inspiration comes from the beauty, courage, elegance, intelligence and behaviour of women. This is expressed in her paintings and sculptures which aim to give a message of peace, love, and inner beauty, a sense of equality, harmony and tolerance.”
