The Price of Procrastination
Nothing comes without a price to pay, and now, once again, Indonesian citizens will pay the price of an astonishing reluctance to put their house in order, as the cost of international borrowing goes up on the back of a poor assessment by Standard and Poor’s credit rating agency. I don’t usually comment on political matters in this column, but it is sad to see matters, that even those at the lower end of the social spectrum know are badly organised, actually affect the standing of a country in international eyes.

Attracted by the sunshine, a higher standard of living and the burgeoning job market, lots of expatriates land up in Indonesia, many of those in Jakarta. A dense urban jungle of super-malls, super-slums and generally unfamiliar sights, Jakarta can be an overwhelming place to find oneself.
So how can we make ourselves feel “at home,” in this vast city?
Finding a home that is comfortable and convenient as well as making friends and taking advantage of the perks of being a “bule,” are some of the most obvious means. Over the next few pages, we take you through some ideas to adjust and make Jakarta not only “livable,” but also somewhere you call “home”.

JIS Middle School Students Take Action
At Jakarta International School (JIS) Middle School, a group of seven 8th grade students were given the opportunity to create and join the Global Issues Action class, due to prior service accomplished in other clubs. In the Global Issues Action class we were able to generate our own goals, decide on responsibilities, and help both the environment and those in need. During this class, we all managed to work independently on the projects that interest us. So far, the class has worked on projects such as Fresh Fruit Friday (providing fruit to malnutritioned kids), Earth Day (raising awareness about the environment), Environmental JIS (composting at JIS), Clothing Donation Box (collecting clothes for those in need), and Hydroponics (a way to grow vegetables without wasting space).We have been given the opportunity to do more service than we have ever been able to do before, as a result we are making a bigger difference day by day.

Discovering The Beauty of Natuna Islands
When Now! Jakarta received an invitation from the regency of Natuna islands; they asked me if I was adventurous enough to explore these relatively untouched islands. A positive “yes”, as a reflection of my abundant curiosity about these islands, was my immediate response. Back when I was in school, the only thing we knew about Natuna islands of the South China Sea (nestled in between Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam) was just that it had a big reserve of liquid natural gas (LNG).

Tana Toraja, that remarkably beautiful series of river valleys in Central Sulawesi, is the tropic’s answer to Bhutan.
It is well worth the 9 hour drive from Makassar (regular flights to Rantepao resume this August). One can do this in a leisurely fashion, as I did — taking in the coastal scenery, the Bugis villages and the cavalcade of local snacks for sale at the roadside — or one can take the luxury night bus and be there in time for dawn.
