Throwback to the ‘20’s
When we wonder what Jakarta was like during the 1920s, it’s hard to locate a building constructed during the period. In the middle of Jakarta’s prestigious district, Menteng, however, is a stunning neoclassical building that serves to reconstruct what architecture was like during the time. The building functions as a hotel – The Hermitage, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Jakarta. The building has been preserved as a work of  cultural heritage by the city government.

The Hermitage's Lobby combines colonial and classic design.

Jasin Tedjasukmana is the man behind the intricate  detail seen in  of The Hermitage Jakarta. “We wanted to preserve the original character of the Dutch East Indies building built in the 1920’s,” he said. The Art Deco style and neoclassical design blend with the original building which was the Telefoongebouw, the Dutch Telecommunication office. The building was later used by the Ministry of Education & Culture and the Soekarno Education Foundation before being part of Marriott International as the family of the Tribute Portfolio Hotel.
