In Indonesia, the Eid Al-Fitr holiday involves long journeys to one’s hometown and beyond. Jakarta is uncharacteristically empty at this time of but there are plenty of things to do for those who will be staying on in the capital. Walk and Cycle, Explore Jakarta.
For those who enjoying walking and cycling, this time of year is ideal as the city, devoid of much traffic, has much cleaner air and relatively empty streets. Explore areas like Kota Tua or Thamrin which have sidewalks and places to visit. For families, consider Ragunan and Ancol-Dunia Fantasi.

On the first day of Eid Al-Fitr, practicing Muslims visit the Grand Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta. The large mosque also welcomes those of different faiths who want to learn some of the city’s history. In addition there are other mosques in the city of equal historic importance such the Sunda Kelapa Mosque and Luar Batang Mosque in the city’s northern reaches. In Cikini, there is the Al Ma'mur Raden Saleh Grand Mosque and Sisingamangaraja has the Masjid Agung Al Azhar which merged with Al Azhar University.
