Is Jakarta a “Smart City"? Is it trying to be? And should it? These are the questions we have to ask as we come face to face with the challenge of “building back better”. In this month's issue of NOW! Jakarta we explore what this concept for our urban future is all about, we speak to renowned Indonesian architect Alwi Sjaaf on what makes a 'liveable' city', and we get inspired by the cycling culture of The Netherlands. Is it feasible here? In our Japan country focus we meet HE Kanasugi Kenji, and check-in with Japan Air. We go sky-high at Chao-Chao, eat in the open air at Grand Hyatt, learn more about the XS Project and ponder... 'do we want to be happy?' All this in July's issue.
With all of this talk of Smart Cities, unfortunately there are still incumbent issues in Jakarta that—even with the introduction of technologies and systems—inhibit some of the city’s efforts to properly modernise.
