Academic Director Eileen Fisher

In the competitive landscape of international education, credibility is earned over time. Yet in fewer than five years, The Independent School of Jakarta (ISJ) has established recognised pathways into leading British boarding schools, an achievement that typically takes a decade or more to secure.

This success is no coincidence. It is the result of deliberate design. Under the academic leadership of Eileen Fisher, formerly Head of Prep at Ipswich High School in Suffolk, ISJ was founded in 2021 with a clear purpose: to operate as an authentic British preparatory school in Jakarta. From curriculum structure to pastoral systems, the school was built to mirror the standards and culture that senior schools in the United Kingdom (UK) recognise and trust.

ISJ exclusively appoints British-trained, native English-speaking teachers who understand the balance of academic rigour and pastoral warmth that defines the best of British prep education. Expectations are high, but so too is the support. Pupils are known as individuals, encouraged to take intellectual risks, and guided to develop confidence alongside competence.

The British identity of the school extends well beyond the classroom. The traditional house system, with houses named after Lewis, Potter, Rowling and Tolkien, fosters belonging, leadership and healthy competition. Weekly assemblies, structured routines and formal hot lunches reinforce the rhythm and culture of a UK preparatory environment. The authenticity is intentional and consistent.

From Year 3 onwards, pupils undertake standardised assessments through GL Education, enabling direct comparison with UK national cohorts. Year 7 pupils have achieved mean Standard Age Scores (SAS) of 111 in English and 103 in both Mathematics and Science, comfortably above UK averages.

Year 8 performance is particularly distinguished, with mean SAS of 123 in English, 129 in Mathematics and 111 in Science. These outcomes position ISJ pupils securely within the top five per cent of UK cohorts in English and Mathematics, and well above national averages in Science.

Academic strength, however, is only part of the story. British preparatory education is equally concerned with character. ISJ places significant emphasis on independence, adaptability and cultural confidence. Residential programmes form an integral part of this philosophy. In April, Year 7 and Year 8 pupils will travel to the UK to attend lessons and board at Ipswich High School, experiencing daily life within a British senior school setting. Such immersion provides invaluable preparation for future boarding transitions.

For families in Jakarta seeking a genuine British pathway, not merely an international school with British elements, ISJ offers clarity and assurance. The school may be young, but its foundations are firmly rooted in established UK practice.
