Quatuor Bozzini
Even the most ardent lovers of traditional classical music can benefit once in a while from a quality performance of experimental modern works. A healthy diet is a balanced diet which may occasionally consist of items we do not typically consume. Furthermore, listening to this kind of music can renew our appreciation for old favorites keeping in mind that all the greats from Monteverdi to Beethoven were in fact cutting-edge composers of their time.

This year, Quatuor Bozzini was awarded the “Performer of the Year” Opus Prize by the Conseil québécois de la musique. They were also a Finalist at the 28th Grand Prix (Conseil des arts de Montréal, 2012). Their recordings have been met with high critical acclaim receiving the German Record Critics Prize for Arbor Vitae (2009), “Contemporary Disc of the Year” (2004), and Étoile-Galaxie Prize from Radio-Canada (2001). Founded in 1999 by Isabelle (cello) and Stéphanie Bozzini (viola), the current members also consist of Alissa Cheung (violin) and Clemens Merkel (violin). An original voice in new, experimental and classical music, their repertoire has included two hundred commissioned pieces, as well as over three hundred premiered works.

Perhaps the most important reason to support this concert with your attendance is the programme which consists of some of the best young Indonesian composers namely Marisa Sharon Hartanto, Matius Shanboone, Stevie Jonathan Sutanto, and Arham Aryadi. Marisa completed her master’s degree in composition at Royal Holloway University of London in 2013.

During her studies, she was a winner at the Baroque Remixed Project National Postgraduate composer competition held by the BBC Concert Orchestra which premiered her work at the Roundhouse, London, under the baton of Charles Hazlewood. The performance was broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

She has composed and directed music for puppet theatre performed at London’s prestigious Royal Festival Hall in Southbank Centre. Her music has been premiered at concert halls in London, Oxford, Orkney (Scotland), Brussels, Australia, Beaver Island USA, Singapore, and Indonesia.

Matius Shanboone is perhaps the youngest Indonesian composer mentioned in the Lexikon Neue Musik by renowned German publisher Bärenreiter. The biggest feather in his richly decorated hat is winning first prize at the prestigious Mauricio Kagel Composition Competition for his work, Six views from my windows, which has since been published by Universal Edition.

Dutch Classical Talent 2017 Winner’s Concert
Winning a competition with a 10,000 Euro prize plus a concert at the prestigious Concertgebouw is quite a big deal. Last year this was won by the Shin Sihan-Anne Brackman violin-piano duo. A decade earlier, Shin Sihan was already carving a name for himself when he won twice in row (2006 and 2008) the National Violin Competition for the Very Young in the Netherlands. In 2007 he received the Bach Sonderpreis at the 12th Internationale Wettbewerb für Violine Kloster Schöntal, Germany.
