IHS Evening Lecture Traces the Rise of Srivijaya at Erasmus Huis

The Indonesia Heritage Society and Erasmus Huis will host an evening lecture on Srivijaya on 6 October at 5.30pm at Erasmus Huis, with Dutch author Herald van der Linde discussing his latest book on Indonesia’s early maritime power. Van der Linde, who has lived and worked in Indonesia and Hong Kong since the 1990s, will trace how control of the Strait of Malacca helped Srivijaya build wealth through trade, supporting temples, Buddhist learning and cultural exchange. His talk will also explore links to Borobudur and the religious influence of the period before turning to the Chola naval raids that brought Srivijaya’s golden age to an end. The lecture offers a concise look at trade, faith and power in early Indonesia.
