At New Zealand School Jakarta (NZSJ), the concept of unity within a school community holds particular significance. In te reo Māori, this principle is expressed through Kotahitanga meaning togetherness, a profound sense of unity grounded in shared purpose and collective responsibility.
It is far more than a word displayed on a wall. It is one of four foundational values that actively shape how pupils and staff learn, lead and relate to one another each day. Together with Growth (Whakatipu), Resilience (Manawaroa) and Wisdom (Mātauranga), Unity (Kotahitanga) provides a steady anchor for the community, reflecting the conviction that meaningful achievement is realised not in isolation, but through collaboration, mutual respect and a shared commitment to the common good.
Kotahitanga is a reminder that as one community, we are called to extend āwhina (support) to one another, to celebrate each other’s successes, and to stand alongside one another in times of challenge. It also compels us to unite in our care for the environment and to contribute positively to the wider world beyond our campus.
Through this philosophy, NZSJ recognises that nurturing and serving children truly “takes a village”. For this reason, the school works in close partnership with their whānau —families, guardians and the wider community— acknowledging that they are the primary and most influential figures in a child’s life. Kotahitanga at NZSJ is evident in their open communication with parents, in community events and workshops, and in celebrations where families are warmly welcomed as active participants. Education is not something that happens to children; it is something built together, with shared intention and trust.

For children to experience genuine togetherness, they must feel seen, heard and valued. The school therefore creates deliberate and regular opportunities for connection: through circle times and morning meetings, school events and excursions, service initiatives, performances, sports teams and collaborative inquiry projects. Older pupils mentor younger learners; classes collaborate across year groups. Assemblies honour not only achievement, but also effort, character and growth. These shared experiences strengthen bonds and deepen relationships across the school.
As a small school, relationships lie at the heart of NZSJ’s identity. Teachers know their pupils well, and staff know families personally. Learners, families, teachers and support staff each contribute to a culture in which every individual feels a genuine sense of belonging.
Kotahitanga also teaches that unity does not require uniformity. Their diversity – of nationality, language, culture and belief – enriches their community. By learning to listen attentively, to collaborate thoughtfully and to respect differences, pupils come to understand that mahi tahi (working together) enables them to achieve far more than one ever could alone.
