Artotel Group is expanding its sustainability efforts into nature restoration

Artotel Group is expanding its sustainability efforts into nature restoration, with Founder and CEO Erastus Radjimin outlining how healthier ecosystems can support stronger destinations and a more resilient hospitality sector. He shared the Group’s approach during the Sustainability Talk, “Building Resilience Through Nature: Why Investing in Nature Matters for Business Resilience”, held on 23 September 2026 at The Rooang at Bimasena, Jakarta.

The discussion brought together hospitality operators, investors and sustainability practitioners to examine a relationship hotels encounter every day. Water, land, energy, landscapes and surrounding communities all shape how destinations function, while environmental decline can place increasing pressure on the businesses operating within them.

Organised through a collaboration between Artotel Group, The Bimasena and Bumiterra, the session featured Radjimin alongside Adisti Ikayanti, CEO of MAKA Group, and Matt Leggett, Founder and CEO of Terratai. Tara Susanto-Joseph, Co-founder and CEO of Bumiterra, moderated the discussion.

For Artotel Group, which operates hotels in destinations around Indonesia, environmental management becomes increasingly intertwined with the operational side of hospitality. Hotel development and day-to-day activities depend on natural resources, while the condition of the surrounding destination affects guests, employees, hotel owners and neighbouring communities.

Since 2022, the company has channelled its environmental, social and governance initiatives through The Art of Goodness, its ESG programme. The framework focuses on defined actions and measurable targets, with nature restoration becoming one of the areas extending its environmental work outside individual hotel properties.

“Nature restoration is not simply about planting trees, but about protecting and restoring ecosystems so they can continue to provide benefits for future generations. For us, investing in nature is part of a long-term investment in maintaining the sustainability of destinations while building resilience within the hospitality business,” said Radjimin.

In Rumbih Village, West Kalimantan, Artotel Group is putting this commitment into practice through a collaboration with B Corp-certified nature restoration company Bumiterra. Together with local communities, the two organisations are restoring one hectare of land, with the programme covering ongoing maintenance and biodiversity recovery rather than ending with tree planting. The project extends Artotel Group’s ESG activities into the surrounding environment and reflects a broader question facing the hospitality sector: how businesses can help sustain the places on which their operations depend.
