The one-stop shopping destination, Central Market PIK, recently celebrated an historical achievement: becoming the first retail building in Indonesia to attain the EDGE Advanced Certificate, a global benchmark in building sustainability.

Located at the heart of Golf Island, Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), this eco-lifestyle hub presents an array of numerous new experiences in one centralised location. Visitors will find the essentials here: supermarket, food and beverage, retail, bookstores and cafés; to unique and innovative spaces like their edible garden, kids playground and even rooftop pet playground.

Aiming to present today’s consumers with something very different in Jakarta’s retail offerings, Central Market PIK innovated further still, by making their centre a place that educates visitors on the importance of sustainability, and showcasing to their own industry that being environmentally-friendly is achievable.

Following its achievement as the Best Retail Architectural Design from the PropertyGuru Asia Property Awards in 2021, this April 2023, Central Market reached key milestones on their sustainability journey: the Green Building Certificate from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), member of the World Bank Group, and Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI). All of these made Central Market PIK, the first retail building in Indonesia to receive the EDGE Advanced Preliminary Certificate.

EDGE is an innovation of IFC, created to respond to the need for a measurable and credible solution for building green infrastructure. Standing for “Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies”, EDGE is a free software, a green building standard, and an international green building certification system. There are three levels of EDGE, those being Edge Certified, EDGE Advanced (Zero Carbon Ready) and Zero Carbon. Central Market PIK has achieved Level 2 certification, the highest of its kind for any retail building in Indonesia.

What exactly is sustainable about this unique shopping centre? Central Market PIK uses a solar panel system and a natural cross-ventilation method with an added biophilic design creating a harmonious relationship between its architecture, the environment, natural lighting, good circulation, and visitor comfort.

This was achieved from a solid collaboration between Amantara with PTI Architects, Bitte Design Studio (interior designer), Eco Mantra (sustainability consultant), Grow Little Garden (landscape designer), and SOSJ Design Bureau & Consultancy (branding consultant).

PTI Architects as the lead architect team also utilised sustainable materials like natural stones, eco-friendly reclaimed wood from Milan Ecowood, terrazzo, terracotta, plastic-wood composite (WPC), and earth-tone colours to create a tropical ambience. More sustainable aspects at this eco-lifestyle hub include a recycling system, a rainwater harvesting scheme, and energy-saving measures—thus, reducing 51% of energy use, 44% of embodied energy on building materials, and 23% of water usage.

Central Market PIK also presented a pet park and kids’ playground for visitors with kids and pets. An amphitheatre provides a place for visitors to relax and savour, all integral to its open-air elements.

Anwar Salim, as Director of Operating Units Amantara, Agung Sedayu Group, lent a few of his words at the ceremony where he emphasised that “Central Market PIK is committed to its eco-friendly concept by applying an Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD), Central Market PIK also educates visitors about sustainability through vertical and edible gardens.”
