HighScope Indonesia’s HighScope Model United Nations (HSMUN) opened its doors once more to 256 students from 59 schools across DKI Jakarta, Bogor, South Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, and Makassar. The next-gen participants who will bear the responsibility of leadership were encouraged to start anew, thus enhancing their understanding of diplomacy, global issues, and their ability to find solutions to them.
The HSMUN event featured 9th-grade middle school and high school student participants dedicating themselves to sharpening essential skills such as public speaking, debate, writing, negotiation, research, problem-solving, consensus-building, compromise, and cooperation. Through this, they not only understand the importance of diplomacy, but also prepare to face future global challenges.
Beginning on 25 October 2024, with a Technical Meeting where several guest speakers provided all participants with valuable insights – the series of events continued on 30-31 October 2024, starting with an Opening Ceremony featuring other guest speakers. One of them was Mr. Caka Alverdi Awal, Director of International Security and Disarmament at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, who emphasized that a deep understanding of various global issues plays a significant role in diplomacy, particularly in decision-making.
In the Conference sessions, nine council representatives from various schools represent countries within the Model United Nations, wherein each delegate during the committee sessions explains their country’s stance on the issues discussed, defends their arguments and national rights, and seeks support from other countries for their proposed resolutions. Then, they present their resolutions during the final General Assembly, and all delegates vote to determine whether to support or reject those resolutions.
The conference sessions, social meetings, and General Assembly are overseen by students from HighScope Indonesia with experience in past Model United Nations events around the world beyond Indonesia, including the US, Singapore and the Netherlands. A Closing Ceremony concluded the HSMUN event, which presented awards for Best Delegate, Honorable Mentions, Outstanding Delegates, Best Position Papers, Oral Awards, and Best Directions.
Mr. Saud Ringo, Deputy Director for Japan Desk at the East Asia Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, also imparted a key idea on the delegates: “The most important part of understanding culture is communication itself. You need to talk to one another. A significant part of being a diplomat is conversing with others, with strangers. People come from different cultures, countries, and backgrounds.”
As a pioneer in United Nation (UN) simulations for high school education, HighScope Indonesia aims to cultivate future leaders equipped with the skills and values necessary for 21st century success, such as making critical decisions in complex situations. To achieve this, they create learning environments that closely resembles real-life situations through various events, such as the HSMUN to the UN.
