General Information

Why do people fast?

Fasting is one of the pillars of the religion which is a sole act that exemplifies nearness to God and is practiced on 29 out of the 30 days of Ramadan. Practicing Muslims abstain from any food or drinks (including water) during daylight hours. This fast is broken at the end of the day with prayer and iftar – a festive meal which is followed by visits from friends and family. Before the sun rises in the morning, Muslims partake in sahur (also known as suhur or suhoor) a pre-fast meal that helps keep people healthy and energized for the day to come.

What is “buka puasa” and “bukber”?

Buka puasa directly translates to “open fast”, and refers to the time when the sun goes down and Muslims can end the day’s strict fast. Bukber is a shortened form of buka bersama, which means “open together.” As iftar is a festive meal to be celebrated with friends and family, many Muslims will break their fast together, thus “buka bersama.” It’s a special time as it brings people together after a long and often difficult day of getting through the day’s tasks without a drop of water nor a crumb of food.
