As humans, our bodies are chemically driven by neurotransmitters which influence our behaviour, emotions, thoughts and processes. Meanwhile, wines contain many components that affect our natural neurotransmitters, which in turn effects our emotions and behaviour. Do doubt some can attest to this!
The neurotransmitters that have a direct impact on what we feel as ‘happiness’, or ‘feeling good’ are dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin. Wine helps the release of dopamine and serotonin in our bodies, much in the same way enjoying a delicious meal, falling in love or even watching a good movie does. This boost in dopamine in wine makes us feel good, of course. But it’s important to add that excessive drinking can have the opposite effect, depleting dopamine and serotonin levels, potentially leading to feelings of depression — so, that’s a good reminder to always drink in moderation!
Surely, a good wine will lead to even better feelings of happiness! As such, some market research has been conducted by Kertawidyawati, Certified Wine & Spirit Educator and Founder of Jaddi Academy, to see which are the best-selling wines in Indonesia of 2024, which was a thriving year for the wine market.
Taittinger Brut Réserve
This iconic champagne comes from the renowned Champagne region and is crafted using a classic blend: 40% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, sourced from over 35 vineyards and vintages. Aged for a minimum of three years in cellars, Taittinger Brut Réserve reaches aromatic maturity, delivering a delicately balanced champagne with complex fruity notes and consistently excellent quality.
Indonesians particularly enjoy sparkling wines for their fine bubbles, refreshing acidity, and vibrant fruity aromas. The combination of fruit and floral elements makes this champagne an elegant crowd-pleaser, offering a lively and enjoyable experience on the palate.
The 30-Mile Range by John Quarisa
Produced in South Eastern Australia by winemaker John Quarisa, who boasts over 20 years of success—including winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy (Melbourne) and Stodart Trophy (Adelaide)—this range has gained notable popularity in Indonesia.
The Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon are especially favoured for their fruit-driven, easy-to-drink styles, making them perfect companions for Indonesian cuisine. Their approachable nature and versatility are key contributors to their success in the local market.
Château Cissac, Haut-Médoc Bordeaux
Château Cissac is a distinguished red wine from the Haut-Médoc region, located between the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. This blend—primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec—is aged in French oak barrels, with 20–30% renewed annually. Recognised as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2018, Château Cissac has upheld its reputation for authenticity, quality, and preservation of terroir since 1932.
The wine offers a full body and a beautifully composed palate of juicy black fruits, smooth tannins, and impressive oak influences. Its round, balanced structure appeals to Indonesian palates, who enjoy a fuller-bodied red wine that remains fruity, soft, and easy to drink.
Black Stallion Barrel Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
Produced by Delicato Family Wines from California’s Oak Knoll District in Napa Valley, this premium wine is crafted with grapes harvested from the Silverado Trail and Horseman’s Center vineyards. Aged for 17 months in 100% new French oak barrels—with 20% undergoing double-barreling—this Cabernet Sauvignon reveals aromas of blackberry jam, nutmeg, and savoury spices.
On the palate, flavours of black currant, toffee, and baking spices are complemented by bold tannins and a long fruit finish. Despite its complexity and significant barrel influence, it maintains freshness with vibrant fruit notes, making it another Indonesian favourite for its full-bodied yet approachable style.
Catalina by Santa Ema
Santa Ema’s roots date back to the early 20th century when Don Pedro Pavone Voglino, an Italian immigrant, discovered the potential of Isla de Maipo’s terroir in Chile. Catalina—an iconic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and Cabernet Franc—is a reflection of this rich heritage.
This deep ruby wine is both elegant and complex, with aromas of red fruits, plums, cherries, tobacco, and vanilla. On the palate, it is intense and well-structured, featuring ripe tannins, tremendous fruit expression, and a long, satisfying finish.
Why Indonesians Love These Wines
Each of these wines shares a similar appeal: aromatic complexity, vibrant fruity notes, smooth tannins, and balanced oak influences. These elements not only align with the Indonesian palate but also pair exceptionally well with local cuisine. The wines’ acidity and soft, round tannins complement the rich, complex flavours and spices often found in Indonesian dishes, creating a harmonious balance on the palate. Who wouldn’t feel happy with such a delightful combination that pleases both body and soul?
There may not be a perfect formula for well-being and happiness, but a combination of factors can undoubtedly improve our lives. Studies show that moderate wine consumption, a healthy diet, and regular exercise contribute to a healthier body and a happier life.
