After overcoming some delays, Jakarta Fashion Week (JFW) 2020 officially kicked off on Tuesday, 22 October, showcasing a designers’ parade that follows with a list of exciting agenda. Marking its 12th edition, Jakarta Fashion Week has a total of 75 runway shows and discussions around emerging issues in the industry and the fashion market for local brands all within the one-week event. Through the JFW mobile apps, Fashionistas are now able to book the digital invitation to watch the show from 270 Indonesian and international designers and more than 2,800 new collections.
“Jakarta Fashion Week has become a reliable catalyst of Indonesian fashion industry. Started by the designer competition, we have succeeded to establish the ecosystem today. Collaboration is the core of the fashion industry, and we are doing this right now with parties holding similar vision to bring Indonesia to the global fashion stage,” says Svida Alisjahbana, the chairwoman of JFW 2020.
Multicultural Expert Staff at the Ministry of Tourism, Esthy Reko Astuti said that Jakarta Fashion Week is included in 100 Calendar of Events promoted by the Ministry as the industry itself has proven as the second-largest contributor to creative economy after the culinary industry.
“JFW is a human creation product that has a huge potential to boost homegrown tourism target of USD 20 billion. In the next five years, we are excited to see how fashion could help improve the Indonesian tourism index,” Astuti said during the opening of JFW 2020 at Senayan City.
The first day of the JFW 2020 highlights the mission of this year’s biggest fashion week in Jakarta, including to redefine the homegrown fashion identity through the hashtag #MERAYAKANINDONESIA (#CelebratingIndonesia), which was seen from the appearance of seven local designers from East Nusa Tenggara with designer Defrico Audy, fashion shows featuring West Sumatran textile and contemporary Javanese batik, as well as a discussion about Indonesian jewelry with renowned designer Rinaldy A. Yunardi.
The exchange between global fashion organisation was started from the debut show of Enharmonic Tavern, Rieka Inouse and Yaokeh (in collaboration with Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo), as well as Seokoon Yoon and SETSETSET presented by KOCCA, South Korea.
To promote menswear, JFW presented ten finalists of the Menswear Designer Competition (LPPM) that has announcing Bima Wicaksana as the 1st winner and favourite contender, along with a few other events focusing on men’s fashion. EPSON collaborated with Amot Syamsuri Muda, Cotton Ink and Kle to show their innovation to digital printing in textiles as an adaptation between fashion and technology.
The first day of the fashion week ended with a runway show as an homage to Indonesian textile by prolific designer Oscar Lawalata and a recycled collection “Daur” by Sejauh Mata Memandang to advance the industry forward to sustainability. A collaboration between Danone-AQUA carries the same spirit to push environmentally friendly fashion on the following day.
Those are the key moments that 2020 event aims to achieve by strongly manifesting the foundation of local identity, collaboration, diversity, innovation and ecology. Acting as a beacon for fashion enthusiasts, The Jakarta Fashion week seems to set the trend with a modest design that features nude and earthy colour palette that has a possibility to power up the market next year.
In the frontline, Jakarta Fashion Week also curated a number of designers to show their collection on Indonesia Fashion Forward (IFF) which involve emerging names, such as IKYK, Peggy Hartanto, Toton Januar, Day and Night, Lekat, PVRA, Andhita Siswandi, Bateeq, Eridani, Major Minor, Rani Hatta and Sean Sheila. This year, the most prestigious fashion show, Dewi Fashion Nights, will close the week of fashion with a special fashion presentation by Adrian Gan, Jeffry Tan, Mel Ahyar and Auguste Soesastro.
