The agency was transformed into the independent administrative institution (under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) on 1 October  2003. The following year, The Japan Foundation reformed its organisation  and since then, it has been developing comprehensive and effective international cultural exchange programmes.

The Japan Foundation, Jakarta has been involved in four types of major activities, which include  programmes developed by the headquarters of the Japan Foundation, the centre’s own programmes contributing to the introduction of Japanese culture or exchange activities, supporting and cooperating with external organisations and researching and collection of information.
