Indonesian Heritage Society’s Evening Lecture: Will Jakarta Sink?
The Indonesian Heritage Society invites guests to an eye-opening evening lecture with Dr Andreas Heri, a leading researcher from the Geodesy Research Division at the Institute of Technology Bandung. With over two decades of experience, Dr Heri has dedicated his work to studying Jakarta’s alarming land subsidence and exploring urgent solutions to prevent a looming catastrophe.
As one of the world’s fastest-sinking cities, Jakarta is facing critical challenges caused by over-extraction of groundwater, the sheer weight of urban infrastructure, and the rising sea level. If left unchecked, projections show that by 2050 almost 95% of Jakarta’s coastal areas will sit below sea level and at risk of being submerged. This lecture will shed light on the science behind the crisis and what can still be done to change the city’s future.
