The high-end yakitori restaurant JUNSEI, hailing from London finally opens its doors in Senopati, Jakarta. Headed by Chef Amn Lakhiani, who dazzled London’s culinary map in 2021 with his Marylebone establishment, JUNSEI promises to deliver a visually stunning and immersive yakitori grill experience. Each skewer, made from the simplest ingredients, is treated as a work of art with a commitment to a zero-waste concept.
Raised in a family of restaurateurs in Jakarta, Chef Aman’s journey has been a flavorful one. After honing his skills at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island, he gained experience at Michelin-starred Dos Palillos, Restaurant Locavore, Namaaz Dining, and Akira Back Jakarta. Tokyo’s vibrant culinary scene ignited his passion for Japanese cuisine, leading him to earn a sushi chef certification from the Tsukiji Sushi Academy.
The highlight of JUNSEI will be its omakase experience, aptly named “Leave It Up to Junsei.” This offering features over 20 variations of yakitori, utilising every part of the chicken. Dishes such as Shiso Maki (chicken breast), Seseri (chicken neck), and Sunagimo (chicken gizzard) are meticulously glazed with housemade tare and finished with a squeeze of lemon.
The omakase seating places guests in the front row, offering an intimate view of Chef Aman’s mastery of cooking over fire. The use of white-hot binchōtan charcoal, prized for its steady temperature, minimal smoke, and slow cooking properties, ensures perfectly charred and textured yakitori. The drink menu will include umeshu, a diverse selection of shochu and sake, and innovative cocktails.
In addition to yakitori, JUNSEI will offer donabe (Japanese-style claypot dishes), contemporary small plates, kushiyaki, onigiri, grilled wagyu, and seafood. The restaurant’s calming atmosphere will provide a serene contrast to the vibrant Senopati area where it is located.
