Jakarta has elected Pramono Anung as its new governor, with Rano Karno serving as vice governor for the next five years (2025-2030). Both Pramono Anung and Rano Karno are expected to assume office in February 2025, in line with Presidential Regulation 80/2024, which governs the timing of regional head inaugurations.

Following the presidential and legislative elections, Indonesia once again celebrated its democratic tradition on 27 November 2024 by holding simultaneous regional head elections, involving 37 provinces, 415 districts, and 93 cities, including Jakarta. Recorded, there are 1,553 candidate pairs competing.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) officially declared the winning governors on 15 December 2024. Jakarta’s KPU determined Pramono Anung and Rano Karno won the most votes in the 2024 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, obtaining 50,7% of the votes and surpassing their main rival, Ridwan Kamil-Suswono.
Pramono-Rano, candidate pair number 3, backed by the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) received 2,183,239 votes, while candidate pair number 1 and was supported by the KIM-PLUS coalition Ridwan Kamil-Suswono received 1,718,160 votes. In third place, the independent candidate number 2, Dharma Pongrekun-Kun Wardana won 459,230 votes.
Pramono Anung, a seasoned politician, having previously taken on the role as Indonesia’s Cabinet Secretary from 2015-2024, joins his new role as Governor with his running mate, Rano Karno, who’s also a well-known actor and politician, recognised for his contributions to Indonesian cinema and his tenure as Governor of Banten from 2014-2017.
During their campaign, Pramono and Rano’s slogan was “Jakarta Menyala” (Jakarta Shines), reflecting their ambition to make Jakarta a national economic centre while maintaining its global competitiveness. Their four-pronged mission addresses societal, economic, governance, and environmental concerns. They envision a Jakarta that not only competes globally but also fosters a modern, equitable society. Their governance plan emphasises accountability and responsiveness, while their environmental strategy prioritises creating high-quality, sustainable living spaces.
As Pramono and Rano prepare to officially take office and lead Jakarta on 7 February 2025, on the inauguration day, they are expected to address the city’s pressing challenges, including urban development, traffic congestion, and environmental concerns. Their leadership marks a new chapter for Jakarta, with residents and stakeholders eagerly anticipating the policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing the city’s growth and liveability.
