Raden Adjeng Kartini was a prominent Indonesian national hero from Java. She was also a pioneer in the area of education for girls and women’s rights for Indonesians. The Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School (GMIS) honoured the anniversary of her birth by conducting a special cultural programme on 22 April.

Special guests were ushered in at the start of the event with the lighting of the lamp in the school lobby. The event then opened with remarks by Bhagu Naraindas Mirchandani, Executive Member of Gandhi Seval Loka and member of the Board of Trustees of GMIS. The keynote address was delivered by Kezia Warouw, Ms. Putri Indonesia 2016. A variety programme followed where students performed various acts such as dances, songs and a few instrumental performances. A group of parents also performed a dance.

Donations were handed over to various charities including Yayasan Rawinala, and SLB Dian Grahita, both schools for differently abled children and Yayasan Binangkit, which takes care of village schools in Sukabumi. The service staff of the school were also honoured during the event.

The vote of thanks was given by Prem B. Bjojwani, Vice President of Gandhi Seva Loka, at the end of the event. Guests were treated to lunch catered by Ganesha Ek Sanskriti.
