A garden might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Sudirman, which is part of what makes JimBARan Lounge at AYANA Midplaza Jakarta worth a closer look. Its outdoor garden has recently reopened with flowing water, small garden islands and new furnishings adding a welcome pocket of greenery among the towers and traffic of the district.

The garden is just one element of JimBARan’s latest update. The lounge has also introduced Indonesian Culinary Heritage, a new menu that looks to different parts of the country for inspiration. Together, the refreshed space and menu add something different to a lounge that has long been part of the business lunch, afternoon tea and after-work drinks scene.

The new menu spans regions across Indonesia from Sumatra and Java to Bali, Sulawesi, Flores and Madura. Many of the dishes are based on recipes passed down through generations, keeping the flavours and cooking traditions of each region at the heart of the menu.

Take the wood-fired Udang Galah Bakar JimBARan, which draws from Bali’s seafood traditions or Mie Goreng Tanah Rencong, with its bold Acehnese spices. Then there is Sate Maranggi Daging Wagyu, grilled over an open flame, followed by Gulai Betis Kaki Domba Muda, where tender lamb is slow-cooked in an aromatic turmeric and coconut broth.

There are six handcrafted regional sambals to work through as well, each offering a different take on Indonesia’s much-loved combination of heat and flavour. Save some room for dessert, where Indonesian sweets are followed by ice creams flavoured with Toraja coffee, Ambon vanilla and Jembrana chocolate.

Still, it is the garden that may encourage you to stay longer than planned. After months of enhancement, the outdoor space now feels ready for the different moods of the day. The garden suits a leisurely lunch, afternoon tea with friends or drinks and dinner as the day winds down.

What makes the experience interesting is the way its menu brings different parts of Indonesia to one table, all within the garden at the heart of Sudirman. At JimBARan, discovering more of Indonesia can be as simple as sitting down for a meal in the middle of Jakarta.
