Sleep Coach Vishal Dasani

Jakarta is a city that never slows down, and if you’ve ever tried to sleep through the roar of traffic, avoid the glow of screens, or resist the lure of late-night hangouts, you’ll know why rest feels elusive here. According to sleep coach Vishal Dasani, true rest goes beyond time spent in bed and calls for something deeper.

“Normal sleep is just closing your eyes,” he says. “Restorative sleep is the kind that refreshes you, fills your energy, and makes you ready for tomorrow.”

A City That Never Sleeps

Groggy mornings—when coffee feels less like a ritual and more like survival—have become Jakarta’s silent epidemic. After energy is eroded by traffic, deadlines, and late-night scrolling, people wake foggy and drained. More time in bed, however, may not necessarily be the solution, with Vishal emphasising that the essence of rest lies in how restored you feel when the day begins, whether the night held seven or nine hours of sleep.

“There’s no quality sleep without enough duration,” he points out, “but duration alone doesn’t guarantee restoration. The signs of quality sleep are simple: You sleep long enough, you don’t wake up too often, and you feel fresh when you open your eyes.”

Sleep itself follows a rhythm made up of distinct stages. Light sleep is when the body begins to relax and the brain quietly organises information from the day. Deep sleep is the phase of physical restoration, when tissues repair, energy stores are replenished, and immunity strengthens. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is the stage of vivid dreaming, where emotions are processed and creativity sparks. Together, these stages form the city’s full cycle of recovery, and missing one is like skipping a vital part of the day, Vishal explains.

Jakarta’s chaos often hijacks that rhythm, leaving bodies exhausted and minds restless. Vishal encounters many clients caught in what he calls hyperarousal.

“People here struggle to slow down. They get into a state where the body is tired, but the mind is wired. They even overthink sleep itself; worrying about not sleeping becomes the very reason they can’t.”

Sleep Hygiene: The Real Upgrade

The path back to restorative rest lies in four everyday choices: timing, fatigue, relaxation, and environment. Vishal calls it the Three Plus One Formula.

“Sleep comes when three conditions align: It’s the right time for your circadian rhythm, the body’s built-in clock that decides when you rest and rise; your body is genuinely tired; and you’re relaxed. The plus one is your environment—air quality, light, noise, temperature, even your pillow. Miss one of these and sleep quality drops.”

He further elaborates that the real upgrade begins long before the lights go out. It’s sleep hygiene—the groove of daily habits—that sets you up for rest, so wake at a steady hour to train your body clock. Let morning light flood in, whether sunlight or a lamp on a grey day, and your brain knows it’s time to rise. Move your body as you would in everyday activities, and you’ll earn deeper sleep later. Eat with balance and you’ll build melatonin, the hormone that nudges you toward rest.

Coffee sharpens focus when taken early, but drink it too late in the day, and it lingers, stealing the night. By evening, the focus shifts to your room: cool, quiet, and softened by rituals, such as journaling, music, or a warm shower. Blend these habits, and they’ll turn sleep from struggle into renewal—the quiet upgrade that powers everything else.

Redefining Wellness Through Sleep

The encouraging sign is that awareness is growing. More Jakartans are beginning to see sleep as a necessity rather than a luxury.

“Clients are increasingly aware of the importance of sleep,” Vishal shares. “They just haven’t found strategies that feel simple and sustainable. My role is to raise awareness and make the process easier.”

As wellness culture expands in Jakarta, with fitness, nutrition, and mindfulness becoming part of everyday life, sleep benefits naturally.

The real recharge comes from sleep; the kind that resets your mood, sharpens your focus, and makes you feel unstoppable again. Vishal Dasani, who established WhiteNoise.id in 2021 after his own struggles with sleep sparked a deep interest in sleep science, reminds us that rest is the foundation of how we function every day.

Sleeping well means taking back control from the constant noise: waking refreshed instead of drained. And perhaps the boldest upgrade may not be a gadget or trend, but simply resting and letting the city wait until morning.
