Milou’s rattan line is built for children and designed to complement the modern home. From strollers and high chairs to bistro sets, dollhouses, and baskets, here’s what to buy and what to look for in a Milou creation.

The stroller strikes a perfect balance between charm and functionality. A curved rattan handle and a low, stable frame on wooden wheels suggest a piece designed for easy, everyday handling. Every surface reflects the care and attention given to the finishing, from its rounded joints and evenly sanded rattan to fabric that sits taut against the frame. The stroller folds down light and compact, with practical details such as washable fabric, a macramé storage net, and gentle colour accents that place it closer to functional furniture than a child’s toy. This level of consideration explains why the stroller has become Milou’s most purchased piece to date.

Behind the stroller is a partnership built on complementary instincts. Milou was founded by Anna Hourrière, a French designer trained in stage and interior design. The combined experience sharpened her instincts for creating children’s essentials that fully meet their needs and still be aesthetically appealing. She leads creative direction and product development, refining each piece through prototyping and paying careful attention to safety and finish. Her Indonesian business partner is Tian Binsar Purba, whose background in finance and operations grounds the brand in production and quality control. Together, they steer Milou as a design-led children’s brand rooted in material integrity and everyday use.

Milou’s appeal is immediately apparent. Graphic lines, warm honey tones, and scaled-down versions of adult furniture draw parents in, while the craft reveals itself in the details: rattan thickness, sanding time, stable joints, safe finishes, and the practical decisions that keep children’s pieces in regular use. This balance of visual clarity and structural discipline comes directly from the way Anna was trained to think about objects long before Milou existed.

Growing up in Paris in a family of creatives and artisans, she studied set design in London, then moved through interior design and production work that demanded research-level attention to detail. When her family relocated, and she became a parent, the question became less theatrical and more domestic: “What do you put in a child’s room that is useful, safe, and looks like it actually belongs in the room?”

Rattan was the spark. In Europe, it cycles through fashion; in Indonesia, it’s treated as “grandmother’s furniture” until a new generation re-sees it as vintage, or as a material worth keeping. Milou emerges within that gap. Indonesian rattan is everywhere in global interiors, yet many local buyers still don’t connect the material to craftsmanship, supply chains, and finishing standards. For Anna and Tian, that disconnect shapes how Milou is made: a brand that shows buyers what distinguishes a carefully finished, child-safe piece when they see and handle it.

This philosophy also extends beyond furniture to ‘Woven Worlds’, a children’s book by Anna and Milou in collaboration with KinderKloud that introduces Indonesian craft traditions to young readers.

How Milou’s creations are made

Milou’s pieces are built through a sequence of precise decisions, beginning with material specification. Rattan thickness is set at around 2.5 centimetres to balance between stability and a child’s grip. Another advantage of using rattan is its linear strength, which allows the design to take on its graphic form, where curves and repetition function both as structure and decoration. Product development takes roughly six months, with frequent factory visits to assess details that photographs cannot capture, like the feel of a sanded edge to the behaviour of a joint under pressure.

The finishing process is treated as a safety measure, as extensive sanding ensures all sharp points, exposed nails, or snags are completely removed. Milou also uses water-based paint and child-safe varnish, prioritising surfaces that can withstand daily use. Here, the quality control extends beyond factory checks. Pieces are rejected or withheld from sale if they fall short, a discipline that affects availability and lead times. Once approved, standard production runs take four to six weeks, with shorter timelines possible for items already in stock.

Milou’s products are showcased at KiN Space in SCBD Park, and also at Bimbi and Bombo across several of their outlets.
