Jakarta’s leading art space Ciputra Artpreneur is bringing an exceptional choir group to Jakarta on October 15 and 16, Vienna Boys Choir will perform in Indonesia!
Vienna Boys Choir, known for its angelic voices, is a national treasure in Austria dating back as far as the 14th century. Together with members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the men of the Vienna State Opera Chorus, Vienna Boys Choir maintains the tradition as imperial musicians: as “Hofmusikkapelle” (Chapel Imperial), they provide the music for the Sunday Mass in Vienna’s Imperial Chapel, as they have since 1498. In 2012, the choir participated for the fifth time in the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Mariss Jansons.
Today, the choir consists of 100 boy choristers from 30 different countries between the age of 9 and 14, forming four different touring groups. They perform 300 concerts each year in front of close to 500,000 people.
“I am truly excited to have this world-renowned choir performing in our theatre. We have staged musicals and dance before, but this will be something different. I want people to come to our theatre and be assured that they will witness a quality performance,” said Rina Ciputra Sastrawinata, President Director of Ciputra Artpreneur.
The choir’s extensive repertoire includes many different genres, from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choirs form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music, waltzes and polkas by Lanner and Strauss. Both the choir and the Chapel Imperial have a long tradition of commissioning new works, going back to Imperial times, when composers like Mozart, Haydn, or Bruckner wrote for the ensemble.
For the concert in Jakarta, preeminent Italian choirmaster Manolo Cagnin will lead the group in what is no doubt going to be an outstanding performance.
