Held in Senayan’s Indonesia Arena, Hikayat Nusantara drew in an audience of 28,000 people across three days, who were treated to a nearly 3-hour exhibition of fabulous dance, music and stage production featuring students from British School Jakarta.
The story follows Zie, played by Zahara, a Year 13 student from British School Jakarta, taking a main role in this impressive national cast. Zie is joined by two Punakawan characters—Bagong (played by Indra Bekti) and Petruk (Risang Janur Wendo)—acting as hosts and guides, and the three characters go on a grand journey across the archipelago to gather a ‘cultural army’ to face a looming threat.
British School Jakarta was also represented in the production’s music ensemble, with Year 13 student Sherazade on harp, as well as music teachers Christine Andrean in the choir and Nino Ario on clarinet.

For Zahara, who has performed at Pagelaran since 2022, the event holds a special place. “I am very grateful to be part of such a grand and magnificent show. I love performing here, especially because it allows me to represent British School Jakarta,” she said. Classic Sherazade echoed this pride: “It’s a joy to perform alongside so many talented artists while showcasing Indonesia’s beauty. I am truly grateful and hope to join again in the future.”
Involved in the entire production were 351 dancers, 60 musicians, 12 national singers and 1,500 stage supporters. The involvement of BSJ’s staff and students in this national showcase is a prime example of how the school nurtures and encourages creativity, inspiring students to connect with culture beyond the classroom.

“Seeing our incredibly talented students and staff performing at Pagelaran Sabang Merauke was a testament to the confidence they have, and the connection they feel to the rich traditions that beautiful Indonesia embodies,” shares BSJ Head of Wellbeing, Andrea Downie.
Stephen Tomlinson, BSJ’s Head of Arts, added, “It has been wonderful to watch our students and staff perform at Pagelaran. Being part of an event like this is truly an honour and a highlight of our year.”

Since its debut in 2022, Pagelaran Sabang Merauke has grown into one of Indonesia’s most anticipated cultural showcases. For BSJ, taking part is more than a performance—it is a reflection of the school’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom – nurturing global citizens who value creativity, culture, and community.
