Starbucks is beginning 2026 by returning to where its story in Indonesia first began. Starbucks Reserve Plaza Indonesia, the brand’s inaugural store in the country, has officially reopened in a new location within the mall, unveiling a refreshed design that reflects its roots while responding to how people gather, work, and connect today. The relaunch signals both continuity and change, reaffirming Starbucks’ long-standing relationship with Indonesia’s coffee culture while adapting to the expectations of a new generation of customers.

The reopening follows a wider reconfiguration of tenants at Plaza Indonesia, which required several brands to relocate within the mall. Rather than treating the move as a logistical necessity, Starbucks chose to use the moment to reimagine its first Indonesian store. Since opening its doors on 17 May 2002, the Plaza Indonesia outlet has carried symbolic weight for the brand, marking the introduction of high-quality Arabica coffee to a broader Indonesian audience and serving as the birthplace of Starbucks’ first generation of local baristas.

More than two decades later, the role of a café has shifted. Customers now seek spaces that allow for conversation, informal meetings, quiet moments, and shared rituals around food and drink. The new Starbucks Reserve Plaza Indonesia responds to this reality with a layout that is more open and communal, offering greater comfort without losing the character that made the original store a landmark.

The design draws from Starbucks’ long connection with Sumatra, a region that has supplied the brand with coffee for over half a century. Earthy tones, warm wood finishes, and a colour palette of soft yellow, orange, volcanic red, olive green, and gold reference the island’s landscape and fertile soil. Subtle motifs inspired by coffee cherries, mountain forms, and Sumatran patterns appear throughout the space, creating a visual narrative that links the store to the origins of its beans.

Situated on the basement level of Plaza Indonesia, the 311-square-metre store accommodates up to 101 guests and is open daily from 8 am to 10 pm. It continues to serve premium Arabica coffees from Indonesia and around the world, prepared by baristas whose training and craft remain central to the Starbucks experience.

The official reopening was marked with a Pour Over Ceremony at the Reserve Bar, led by Anthony Mc Evoy, Yeyen Fathiah, Store Manager of Starbucks Reserve Plaza Indonesia, and Tan Boon Piin, CEO of Plaza Nusantara Realti.

Anthony Mc Evoy, Director of PT Sari Coffee Indonesia, the brand licensee for Starbucks in the country, described the reopening as a way to deepen the company’s relationship with Jakarta’s coffee community. He noted that the refreshed store reinforces Starbucks’ long-term commitment to Indonesian coffee, its farmers, and the communities connected to the brand. He also expressed appreciation for Plaza Indonesia, whose partnership has supported Starbucks since its earliest days in the market.

As Starbucks looks ahead, the renewed Plaza Indonesia store stands as a reminder of where the brand began in Indonesia and a statement where it is headed, by honouring its history while reshaping its space for present-day needs.
