A beloved French pastry tradition has landed in Indonesia. The Galette des Rois Club was officially launched at the French Residence in Jakarta on 12 January 2026, hosted by the French Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN, H.E. Fabien Penone.
Traditionally enjoyed around Epiphany Day on 6 January, the galette des rois is a golden, buttery puff pastry filled with almond cream and hiding a tiny figurine known as la fève . Finding it earns the lucky guest a paper crown and the title of King or Queen for the day, a charming ritual that transforms dessert into a moment of joy and togetherness. In France itself, nearly 60 million galettes are enjoyed each year during the festive season.
Meanwhile, the Galette des Rois Club is an extended observance of this flavourful tradition, now officially landing her in Indonesia. Its launch brought together some of Indonesia’s finest bakers and pastry chefs, those who have long championed the galette des rois in their kitchens, alongside food lovers and members of the business and diplomatic community. Guests were invited to savour this iconic French creation in an atmosphere of warmth, celebration, and shared discovery.

“Club de la Galette des Rois is a kind of club that exists in several countries. It gathers professionals, bakers, and pastry chefs who propose Galette des Rois in their shops, with two goals: to pay tribute to these chefs and to help them to promote this wonderful tradition of getting together at the beginning of the year to enjoy this specialty. I’m very happy to officially launch the Club de la galette des Rois en Indonesie, accompanied by 14 of its nearly 20 pioneer members, French and Indonesian chefs from Jakarta, Bali, and Yogyakarta. And, I congratulate its president, Ramon Medina, owner chef of Le Levant Boulangerie and Restaurant in Cipete.” stated H.E. Fabien Penone.
The creation of the Galette des Rois Club reflects France’s continued commitment to gastronomy as a cultural bridge, following the spirit of French Gastronomy Week, held annually in October. As Indonesian diners increasingly embrace croissants and fine pastry, the galette des rois feels like a natural and welcome addition to the country’s evolving culinary scene.
This first edition of the Club brings together 18 participating restaurants across Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and Bali, forming a curated network dedicated to celebrating this time-honoured tradition. Through regular gatherings and collaborative events, the Club aims to nurture cultural exchange and strengthen the friendship between France and Indonesia.
