Marking Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, KAKAW Fine Chocolate & Patisseries has joined hands with the renowned fashion brand Sejauh Mata Memandang in an exciting collaboration that merges fashion and sweets. The two have introduced ‘Bunga Laut, Tanah Rempah’, a limited-edition praline collection that draws inspiration from the archipelago’s diverse land and sea.

This collection combines local ingredients with cultural motifs, presenting chocolate as crafted medium that reflects Indonesia’s heritage and identity. These chocolates come dressed in Sejauh Mata Memandang’s signature Bunga Laut patter, a motif that celebrates the ocean’s beauty while quietly reminding us of our collective duty to protect it. In the same way the sea links Indonesia’s islands, here it links textiles to cacao, culture to craft. The partnership extends beyond design: both brands are aligned in their commitment to preservation.

The pralines themselves tell stories that resist neat categories. From Papua, the wild jeruk rimba delivers a brisk, untamed citrus note, while Arabika Wamena distils the floral highland coffee into something at once delicate and lingering. Colo-Colo is a daring interpretation of a beloved tangy seafood sambal, and Kenari highlights buttery Maluku–Papua nuts in smooth chocolate. Even the earth is represented, with Talas Kelapa offering taro and coconut comfort, and Ransiki grounding the collection with cacao from Papua Barat’s fertile soil.

Sumatra, too, is given its full due, rendered not as clichés of spice but as a living pantry. Ruby Kecombrang arrives with the fragrance of torch ginger, while Dadih, fermented buffalo milk curd, finds its way into silky chocolate. Coffee Galangal brings together punchy beans with a bite of root, and Bika Ambon folds the warmth of spiced honeycomb cake into confectionery form. The boldest entry is Rendang, aromatic and unapologetic, while Andaliman surprises with a flash of citrus-tinged Batak pepper. Each is a modern interpretation of heritage, but never at the cost of authenticity.

The collection is offered in two forms: an assorted box of 12 pralines priced at IDR 300,000++, or a special edition with the Bunga Laut bandana at IDR 600,000++. Available exclusively from 17 August 2025 at KAKAW Fine Chocolate & Patisserie in ASHTA District 8, and in limited numbers online, it is designed as both indulgence and memento.

Behind the collaboration are two names steeped in Indonesian identity. KAKAW has long been dedicated to working with local cacao, taking it from bean to bar with an eye on both quality and provenance. Sejauh Mata Memandang, founded by Chitra Subyakto in 2014, has built its reputation as a slow fashion label that insists on accountability and certified as a B Corporation, working with artisans and SMEs, and embedding environmental responsibility into its textiles. In Bunga Laut, Tanah Rempah, their philosophies converge: chocolate as culture, pattern as reminder, flavour as story.

Orchestrated under the Artisan Kuliner Group, the collective behind Social Affair, Bakerman, Noesaka, Canton 108, Canton 168, PIER No 12, Super Yumcha, and Jullien—this release is about resonance and how consumers can best relate to the products that represent them.
